Coming of age in the post-grunge era in Olympia, Washington, coupled with early exposure to old school funk and soul records from her parents' collection, DJ Jalen crafted a sound that reflects the musical patchwork of her youth. Classically trained in music composition and the viola in her formative years, Jalen was more interested in the art of deejaying she witnessed through her father. She began experimenting with scratching on his dusty belt-drive turntable with Parliament and WAR records while flirting with the idea of turning her passion into her profession. With a vast collection of music in tow, Jalen moved to New York City to pursue studies in Politics and Social Change. It was here that her passion for spinning magic in the name of social enjoyment was realized. After happening upon a set of turntables from a friend, she honed her mixing skills in the hallows of her NYU dorm room. Shortly thereafter, she began doing gigs at private parties, bars and clubs on the local circuit. Keeping her childhood influences close, Jalen thrives at the intersection of classic and current. She has shaped a repertoire that can be described as bridging the gap between the memories of yesteryear and the sonically progressive artistry of tomorrow. DJ Jalen has moved crowds from Cuba to Crash Mansion with her future-focused aesthetic. Her versatility and penchant for connecting with a variety of audiences is apparent in her eclectic list of clientele including Authentic, Homebase NYC, Melanie Charles, Nyle, Tanya Morgan and NYU among others. In addition to a residency at Fluid Nightclub in Philadelphia, Jalen has spun at NYC's CitySol Festival, Nublu, Beauty Bar, Gallery Bar and Bowery Poetry Club. From house parties to corporate events, DJ Jalen keeps the audience's experience top priority. Her creed is outfitting an event with the right sound, maintaing a rhythm and keeping the people moving. |
